The SSA Australian Children’s Championship is decided over two
state-based heats, in both NSW and Victoria, culminating in the
National Finals where the competitors earn double pints towards the
overall National Championship standings. Children are classified by
the FIS in two categories, Child 1, being 11 and 12 year olds and
Child 2 being 13 and 14 year olds.
This year, the Australian Children’s National Final was held at
Mount Hotham. The mountain turned on glorious weather for both days,
with cold temperatures in the morning providing ideal snow
conditions for ski racing, with warming conditions and bright
sunshine as the day progressed. However, the Hotham Events
Department was able to prepare excellent courses for the Giant
Slalom (GS) on Saturday and for the Slalom (SL) on Sunday with the
snow holding up to produce fast times for both days. The GS was run
on the traditional Cornice to Snake Gully course, modified slightly
for the Children and the SL was run from Blue Snake to Snake Gully.
These are the two most demanding race courses for Children in the
country, enabling Hotham to reinforce its reputation for providing
top level terrain for ski racing. Thanks go to the Hotham Events
Department, under the leadership of Scott Sanderson, Eric Bickerton,
the National TD in attendance, the Mount Hotham Race Squad and all
the volunteers involved. The event organisation was flawless, with
strict adherence to the timetable and accurate results.
From Tuesday 06 September 2005, full results from the event can be
